“Never confuse yourself by visions of an entire lifetime at once…remember that it is not the weight of the future or the past that is pressing upon you, but ever that of the present alone… the passing minute is every man’s equal possession, but what has once gone by is not ours.” – Marcus Aurelius in Meditations

So… Is your project team living in the now? Or are they torturing themselves by ruminating over past difficulties or imagining future troubles?

    Greer’s Challenges…

    Reflections

    Reflect on these questions:

    • Is someone on your project team stinging from a failure or disappointment? If so, how does this “show up” in their work today?
    • Does someone on your project team truly fear some dire possibility in the future? If so, how does this effect their work… their enjoyment of their work?

    Team Challenges

    Ask your team:

    • What echoes of past failures or disappointments seem to haunt us?
    • What potential demons are waiting for us around the next bend?
    • How do these past and future events come to life in our work or our relationships with each other and with people outside our project team?
    • How might we “move on” from these and “be here and now?”

    Project Manager Challenges

    • Pay close attention to your team; listen with your heart and see how past failures or imagined future troubles haunt them.
    • Find ways to point out that the past circumstances that led to the failures are not the same as today’s circumstances.
    • Find ways to show that circumstances simply aren’t right for the imagined future troubles to occur. (Or find ways to remove the potential causes of these troubles.)
    • Praise what’s going well… let them know how pleased you (or the customer) are with the results they are getting.
